Lightening Techniques

  • Full head: Expected time taken for this service: 3.5 - 4 hours.

Half head: Expected time taken for this service: 2.5 - 3 hours.

Quarter head: Expected time taken for this service: 1 – 1.5 hours

When selecting this method, it’s important to know that the lightened part will start directly from your root.

When applying classic highlights, the stylist will weave out sections of hair and paint these woven pieces with a lightener.

Either just the regrowth is painted with a lightener for a root touch up or the whole strand will be painted from roots to ends for a full-length streak effect.

It is also possible to have a combination of highlights and lowlights (color) for extra dimension.

Typical foiling portions to ask for when booking your appointment are as follows:

You can choose a very fine weave also known as Babylights, a thicker weave or slicing for a more obvious effect. This will all be determined in your consultation.

Here are some examples of foiling options or weave sizes:

    1. The slice method

If you like maximum, bold coverage, then slicing is your best option. The slices can be placed in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal way. This provides movement and direction. This technique creates strong defining stripes and is often also used to frame your face.

    2. The medium or regular weave method

This method simply creates classic streaks, either for texture in natural or colored hair or as a root touch up for non - natural blondes who wish to maintain a blonde appearance.

    3. The Babylights or micro-weave method.

This method provides natural separation and subtle dimension. Very fine streaks are woven throughout the hair creating a soft mix between the micro-lights and your natural hair. This option is also great to blend grey hairs.

    4. Herringbone highlights

Expect a low-maintenance, natural grey blending effect with this method.

To achieve this effect, finely woven streaks are lightened, alternating with finely woven lowlights in and among the grey hairs. Here we incorporate the grey hair into the color palette and do not hide/cover them resulting in a naturally balanced mix of all three colors. The mix of warm and cool tones creates this perfectly blended medley of colors, minimizing the regrowth/demarcation line.

  • Expected time taken for this service: 30 minutes.

A root/base bump is when an all-over high-lifting color is applied to your root area or between already existing highlights.

This effect allows your root area to look lighter overall.

If you are short on time, this method is also a great alternative for root touch-ups between foiling appointments and it costs much less than foiling every single time.

Although this service enhances your blonde effect with highlighting or when applied as a root application only, this method will show a regrowth line faster than the ordinary classic foil method without root lifting.

On the contrary, you would be alternating your highlighting services and saving your hair from consecutive bleach lifting, spending less money and time overall in the salon.

  • Expected time taken for this service: 3.5 - 4 hours.

Balayage is great for blondes and light-haired brunettes looking for a sun-kissed effect. With this technique, a more subtle and natural result is achieved by sweeping the colour or lightener openly along the surface of carefully selected panels of hair, leaving the roots and underside of each panel darker for a dimensional and natural effect.

Sometimes this technique is combined with classic babylights to create a more obvious face frame.

  • Expected time taken for this service: 3.5 - 4 hours.

Foilayage highlights are recommended for clients with darker hair tones. This technique is created by incorporating foils into the balayage technique.

Each panel of hair is slightly backcombed, then saturated in color or lightener and wrapped in foil. This intensifies the lightening process resulting in a more vibrant effect.

  • Expected time taken for this service: 3 – 4 hours.

Like balayage, this technique offers a beautifully natural effect and is suitable for blondes and brunettes. This freehand technique only lightens hair that would be sunkissed.

A soft transition in color is achieved by softly back-combing selected sections of hair at the root. The remaining hair in each backcombed section is free-painted and lightened to the desired level of lightness.

  • Expected time taken for this service: 3 – 5 hours.

Airtouch highlights is a hair-colouring technique that provides seamlessly blended colour.

The result of "AirTouch highlights" is the opposite of the chunky highlights trend.

Airtouch highlights" take longer than traditional highlights and is a colouring technique where slices of hair are sectioned out and with the use of a blow dryer, we blow away the newer growth out of the held sliced section, leaving behind the older growth. This way we only highlight the oldest strands of hair. This gives a seamless, blended effect and a soft demarcation line as it grows in.

While you can get AirTouch highlights throughout your entire head, it's best to do it around the crown and the face frame.

Unlike traditional highlights, AirTouch highlights aren't great for all hair types, but they can be performed in a variety of hair colours because the tone and intensity can be adjusted as needed. "The technique is best for straight or slightly wavy hair

  • Expected time taken for this service: 2.5 – 3 hours.

This method allows you to keep your natural hair colour at the root area and gradually a lighter natural hair colour of your choice is faded into the mid-lengths and ends.

Because your natural hair colour itself is maintained at the base of your hair, you will not need to maintain / touch up regularly.

  • The word “sombre” combines the words “soft” with “ombre.” Sombre is basically a subtler, more natural-looking version of ombre highlights. Roots are left their natural color, then a slightly lighter color is added at the tips, with a soft transition between the colors.

  • Color melting is a technique that is used to blend highlights or balayage into a client's root color in order to create a more gradual transition and subtler lines of demarcation. It works by depositing tone to generate a custom blend in the roots.

  • A hair glaze is a non-permanent treatment color treatment that adds shine to hair and can help with flyaways and frizz. Think of it as a deep conditioning treatment that seals in color and tones it. When it comes to natural or textured hair, Lord says the service is typically applied through a rinse.

  • The technique involves coloring a section of hair in a contrasting shade, so it stands out against the rest of your mane, creating a look that's eye-catching and fun.

  • This coloring treatment lightens your hair without damaging bleaching agents. It lightens dark hair by removing hair pigmentation without penetrating your hair strands.
